Just Do It

Hello everyone! I just want to tell you how happy I am to be blogging about my passion for design, cheese, and food. It has always been a dream of mine to create a blog where I can share things that get me excited and inspired. Some have you may seen that I have published posts on this blog before. But, to be quite honest; I became a bit shy to post content. The idea that there will be others than the ones I already know reading made me extremely nervous. Sometimes you just have to muster up the courage and never give up on what you are truly passionate about.

A fresh new start is always is nice. So, here are some visuals that inspire! :)

Cheese, especially from California.  Yum! I've always loved eating and learning about cheese. I actually work as a cheese specialist.

Fresh Ingredients. I'm like a kid in a candy store when I'm at the farmers market.

There's nothing like texture; it adds so much interest and volume.

Typography. Kerning, serifs/san serifs, and typefaces.  You name it, I adore it.

Bold Graphics. How fierce is that letter "V"?

Brights juxtaposed with neutrals.

Creative eats. Macaroni and Cheese egg rolls. Mega delicious.

Entertaining.  Cheers!

I'm a Barbie Girl

When I came across this plate from French Bull , the illustration style reminded me of the Barbie home I played with as a child. It was a portable house that you could carry around with you, and consisted of an illustration style very similar to this plate. As my main inspiration piece, I wanted to create a dinner party for the modern Barbie. Wouldn't Bar be the perfect candidate? She's fun, stylish, and even the letters B-A-R of her name are the first three letters in Barbie!

When it's hot outside all I want to do is dive into a mountain of frozen yogurt. Fro-yo shops have been popping up everywhere, and it's always fun to see what designers think of in terms of identity and interior. Igloo zoo designed by Australia based firm Fabio Ongarato Design, is such a soothing space. The repetition of shapes and the icy color palette not only reflects the logo, but the name itself.

Vegas, Baby

I'm headed off to Vegas with the girls for some fun time. We have so many things planned, and what I'm most excited for the most are the restaurants and buffets (haha). It's really funny how we plan our activities around food, but its the best way to get to know a city like Vegas. Aside from that, I'm just looking forward to just hanging out at our hotel pool, dancing the night away, and celebrate with some bubbly. Here are just a few things I can't wait for. Hope to see yah back here Wednesday for a photographic summary of the trip!

Leaving Las Vegas

I think anyone would agree coming back home from any vacation is a little sad. I had a great time in Vegas with the girls, exploring a place I've never seen. I went to Fremont St. or "Old Las Vegas" and zip-lined through the strip, which was very thrilling. The hotel we called home for 4 days and all the food we stuffed our faces with was incredible; all the more so because I was with great friends.

Beautiful interactive column at the Cosmopolitan.

Once I got a sample of Wonka Ice Cream , I was hooked. Really, it's what I crave when I'm in need of some ice cream.  They have of great assortment of interesting flavors like chocolate covered potato chip. What I enjoy most about Wonka ice cream is that its flavors have just the perfect amount of sweetness. Now, who's ready for a scoop?

*If you're looking to try some Wonka-tastic ice cream, give Chipperberry swirl and Chocolate Chipper Chip a shot. You'll love it.

Gadget Gizmo {Cheese Graters}

Gadgets are great help in the kitchen. They can perform tasks that simply makes cooking and entertaining so much easier. We're looking at graters today, a must-have for any cook. I prefer grating cheese fresh than purchasing it pre-shredded. You can control how fine you want your shreds, and honestly, it just taste better. These tools are pure genius and don't overcrowd storage space.

3 in 1 grating pen. I want!

Twist top grater that's like a pepper mill. Microplane  should come up with a large wooden one.

Get slices with more surface area for your salads.

Measure pasta, then grate parmesan. Two tools in one.
This is not a grater, but how fun would it be to have a cheese curler? Great for garnishing and if you're like me, eating delicate ribbons of cheese.

I'm on the hunt for the perfect apron, something cute and will help shield messes. While perusing Anthropologie , I fell in love with this one. It's got color, print,  and coverage, just about everything that I'm looking for.

Chef Jamie Oliver  has been a culinary interest of mine since childhood. I remember watching his show, The Naked Chef, on Food Network and wanting to eat everything he dished. His simple approach to good food, and endless efforts on healthy eating has allowed him to grow his brand and become a superstar of a chef.
I enjoy the simplicity and modernity of his logotype created by UK design firm Sea Design , and the whimsical yet sophisticated packaging designed by Pearlfisher , which I think, encapsulates Jamie's quirky personality.

I am not a total neat freak. But, when condensation rings make their way on the table, I get a little uneasy. I'm in search for a not your average coaster, and these ones are the perfect candidates. The deli sandwich coaster is hilarious. Which one is your fave?

Murray's Cheese Shop

I've been eyeing Murray's Cheese shop ever since cheese piqued my interest. It has been a New York institution since the 40's and carries an impressive selection of local, imported, artisanal cheeses. They have expanded their goods to oils and charcuterie, and now have their own cheese bar. I have never been to New York, and I'm making it a goal to visit Murray's. After seeing what Pentagramhas done with their identity and packaging makes me want to go that much more. Have you ever been to Murray's?

Beginner Blues

The blue category of cheeses are often known for its bold flavor and pungent aroma. Although very delicious, it's piquant taste can be overwhelming for some. Note that not all blues are strong and spicy.  Start with mild blues and begin to train your palate for the sharper tasting ones. Then, you can decide which is more of your preference. I have lined up my top beginner cheeses that may have your taste buds pleasantly surprised.

Cambozola by Champignon
This is one of my favorite cheeses from Germany. Delicious product of camembert and gorgonzola- hence the name.  The mushroomy earthiness of camembert balances out the blue cheese veins. It's buttery triple creme, perfect for spreading on warm crusty bread.

Black Label Cambozola by Champignon
The longer ripening time enhances the taste and texture, allowing for a full-flavored cheese. Camembert and gorgonzola flavor profiles are seamlessly integrated. A must try.

Dolcelatte also called Gorgonzola Dolce

A young, sweet gorgonzola that has only been aged for 3 months. The paste is delicate, light, and just DELICIOUS.  The natural sweetness of the cheese is a nice counterpart to the blue. The blue is a bit more pronounced than the others I have discussed. It's a perfect dessert cheese. Serve with Moscato d' Asti , an italian sparkling white wine or Port.

Saga's Blue Brie

A delightful triple creme brie with a kick of blue. Creamy, and the blue is more evident in this one since the base of the cheese is a subtle brie. Overall, pretty mild.
*Earthiness/mushroom qualities are more pronounced in camemberts.

*TIP: If you're into blues that aren't too assertive, go for the italian version, gorgonzola. It's made with
penicillin glaucum, a milder blue mold than penicillin roqueforti (found in Roquefort).

Swap It! {Edam & Babybel}

We've all been there. A recipe calls for a particular cheese and you make a trip to the market only to find out they don't have what you're looking for. What to do? Are you going to forget about the recipe and find something else to prepare 2 hours before your dinner party? I hope not. You're going to swap it. Say you need a Dutch Edam for a potato gratin. Swap it with Babybel. Both cheeses share similar flavors: slightly sharp, nutty, smooth, and mellow. Babybel is the French equivalent to Dutch Edam and  sold in nearly every grocery store. It's miniature size is ideal if you only a need a small amount.

Edam- often ball shaped and coated in red wax. They come sliced as well.

Babybel . Everyone's favorite miniature cheese!

*Note: If you are particular about Edam, there are artisanal versions in specialty cheese shops that resemble the original 14th century Edam from Northern Holland. What's the difference from the ones we are accustomed to? It's longer aging process results in hard, sharper cheese.

Whenever I'm eating out I can't help but examine the restaurant's logo, menu design, and just about every graphic element in sight. It's the designer in me. Palomino , one of my favorite spots in San Francisco, ( graphics pictured are from their Seattle location) has it all. They have a simplistic yet memorable logo and a gorgeous menu with a mix of of modern and traditional typefaces. If you're in SF, definitely come for happy hour. Happy hour is from 3-close and they offer a delicious menu of salads, flatbreads, and unique bites. Their potatoes gorgonzola is delicious. Give their pomegranate mojito a try as well. Refreshing, and the perfect start to a great meal.

Once upon a time I came across these adorable wooden bread and cheese boards on Anthropologie .
"What a great way to serve rustic breads and artisanal cheese," I said to myself. As the main source of inspiration, I began to conceptualize a romantic, fairy tale cheese party fit for a princess. The End. :)

Typography is an expressive form of visual communication that I have always adored. Being a design major, I think it's understood. Any item consisting of type, sign me up! It's nice when your interests are reflected into your kitchenware. And... a cupboard full of these would signify a type maniac, like myself.
